Vehicle Design and Product Strategy - Thermal and Mechanical Senior Engineer

Your mission

As Thermo-Mechanical Senior Engineer, you will be in charge of defining the detailed technical requirements applicable to the vehicle thermo-structural sub-systems, orientate the design choices through simplified approaches (pre-sizing models, analytical computations, engineering feeling…), model the physical architecture of the spacecraft, predict its thermo-structural behavior and optimize its performance while being compliant with the technical specifications and cost/schedule targets defined by the Lead Vehicle Design. The Thermo-Mechanical Senior Engineer will either provide guidance to the mechanical and thermal engineers building the detailed models on the demonstration mission (currently under execution) or directly build these models for the early phases of the operational missions. 

  

You will report to the Lead Vehicle Design, particularly on the following aspects:

  • Any technical issue encountered in the design activities 
  • Any deviation or risk of deviation in terms of technical compliance 
  • Any deviation or risk of deviation in terms of cost or schedule targets 
  • Any critical information to be considered for the global roadmap, trade-offs or logic construction and implementation

 

You will be focusing on the operational mission early phases (Mission Champagne & Mission Terminal Moon), and will also support the team in the execution of the demonstration mission (Mission Possible), with variable load repartition over time, depending on the priorities and deliverables defined by the Lead Vehicle Design.


You will also have a role of deputy to the Lead Vehicle Design, meaning that you will represent her when she is away, and be requested to take on some of her responsibilities on the technical management of the team, upon delegation of authority.

Your responsibilities:

  • Define the mechanical and thermal loads and environment requirements applicable to the vehicle thermo-structural subsystems during each phase of the mission (ground phases, launch, orbital phase, Moon landing, reentry, splashdown, recovery...) 
  • Build simplified mechanical models to evaluate the behavior of the structure with respect to these requirements and the loads induced on the several subsystems and payloads
  • Build simplified thermal models to evaluate the environments on the structure, the subsystems and the payloads 
  • Provide guidance and support to the structural and thermal analysts in building and feeding their detailed models, and potentially build yourself detailed models as needed
  • Build the sizing and optimization logic and unlock any potential design, performance or compatibility issue using quick analytic/simplified approaches to guide them in the right direction
  • Build up the requirements for each thermo-structural component towards the suppliers in close interaction with production engineer and CAD engineer
  • Build up the requirements for each equipment subsystems (propulsion, avionics) and for the payloads
  • Report to the Lead any technical concern and any activities to be integrated in the workflow (trade-offs to be organized, sensitivity studies to be performed, inputs needed from the internal and external stakeholders…)
  • Support the Lead in the definition of the development roadmap and qualification logic
     
Your location:
You will perform your duties principally at one of the Company's premises (in Bordeaux or in Munich) and may be required to travel from time to time between our company’s premises in the course of your duties.
What we would love to see from you

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in thermo-mechanical, aerospace or manufacturing engineering 
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in aerospace vehicle design
  • Experience with CAD softwares (CATIA, Solidworkds...)
  • Experience with Structural analysis softwares (Hyperworks, Nastran, …)
  • Experience with Thermal and Aerothermal analysis softwares (Esatan, openFoam, Ansys…)
  • Experience in building simplified thermo-mechanical models on Matlab, Python, C+
  • Strong knowledge on aerospace vehicle design and associated challenges
  • Experience in Additive Manufacturing 
  • Fluent in English. German and French is an asset
